Introduction

“The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist”—Charles Baudelaire

The devil is one of the most overlooked, if not the most overlooked topic in the entire Bible, and this is not by accident. The devil is our enemy number one, and yet we barley talk about him let alone study him. And this is exactly want he wants. The last thing the devil wants is for his enemies, Christians, to talk and think about the devil. If he can make himself invisible, he has a great advantage at destroying peoples lives. The devil does not need to out right make us evil, he just needs to  cause us to be distracted by the things of this world for example. The devil is out to kill us, and we need to be wide awake and ready.

  1. The Bible tells us the things we need to fight against the devil. First we need to understand that the devil is deceitful and a liar. Jesus masterfully describes the devil in John 8:44 – You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
  2. We need to “not give the devil an opportunity.” (Ephesians 4:27). What are you allowing into your life? What kind of music, ideas, movies, people, etc. are you allowing the devil to use to tempt you?
  3. Its important to realize the devil works in the shadows, its to his advantage. If the devil was open about his purposes, people would be horrified and not participate, so he has to trick and deceive people into making wrong and sinful choices. Therefore, we must “Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.” (Ephesians 6:11). We need to read, understand and memorize, yes, we need to memorize the Word of God! Psalms 119:11 “Your word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against You.”
  4. One of the great evils the devil has ever done to the church is make people believe they are already saved. No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. – 2 Corinthians 11:14. The devil has tricked millions of people into believing that they follow the Truth or Follow Jesus when in reality, they do not follow or know the Bible. The devil deceives.
  5. The devil wants you and me to blame God. When God allowed Job to be tested, The Scriptures reads in Job 1:22 “Through all this Job did not sin nor did he blame God.”
  6. Hell was made for the devil and his angels, not us. Mt 25:41 “Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels;” but if people follow the devil, they will go to Hell with him.
  7. The devil is looking to opportunities to tempt and kill us. Lu 4:13 “And when the devil had finished every temptation, he departed from Him until an opportune time.”
  8. The devil does not want us to think and know the Truth, he will try to distract us, keep us busy, and or simply keep us away from the Truth. Lu 8:12 “And those beside the road are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, so that they may not believe and be saved.”
  9. The devil will put evil, corrupt, and bad ideas into our minds to try to get us to fail God, sin against God or anything that will prevent us from doing God’s Will. Joh 13:2 And during supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, [the son] of Simon, to betray Him,
  10. The devil oppresses us. Ac 10:38 “[You know of] Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and [how] He went about doing good, and healing all who were oppressed by the devil; for God was with Him.
  11. Eph 4:27 and do not give the devil an opportunity. This is very important. Sometimes its simply not being involved or going to places that will tempt you. If you know it may cause you to sin, avoid it.
Eph 6:11 Put on the full armor of God, that you may be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.
  12. 1Ti 3:6 [and] not a new convert, lest he become conceited and fall into the condemnation incurred by the devil.
  13. 1Ti 3:7 And he must have a good reputation with those outside [the church,] so that he may not fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
  14. 2Ti 2:26 and they may come to their senses [and escape] from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will.
  15. Heb 2:14 Since then the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil;
  16. Jas 4:7 Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
  17. 1Pe 5:8 Be of sober [spirit,] be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
  18. 1Jo 3:8 the one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, that He might destroy the works of the devil.
  19. 1Jo 3:10 By this the children of God and the children of the devil are obvious: anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother.
  20. Jude 1:9 But Michael the archangel, when he disputed with the devil and argued about the body of Moses, did not dare pronounce against him a railing judgment, but said, “The Lord rebuke you.”
  21. Re 2:10 ‘Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.
  22. Re 12:9 And the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent of old who is called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.
  23. Re 12:12 “For this reason, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them. Woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, knowing that he has [only] a short time.”
  24. Re 20:2 And he laid hold of the dragon, the serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years,
  25. Re 20:10 And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are also; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

Empirical Data - My Personal Experience

This section is rather dangerous because its my experiences and not the Bible. But I want to share them in case they maybe of use to you. Nevertheless, remember first and foremost, they are just what I think, and maybe in fact incorrect. I plan on being more conservative in my suggestions.

  1. The devil will make you busy….in the wrong things. There is a phrase that goes “If the the devil can not get you to sin, he’ll make you busy.” This means often we do not even have to be doing evil things, but if the devil can distract you from serving God, teaching the Gospel, etc. he can still really hurt your spiritual life; and the souls of others. Often work and extracurricular activities are examples. Sports are great, we need them, but they can not consume our lives.
  2. Divide and Conquer: The devil most certainly will try to get you away from other Christians. We can grow weak and fall away when we try to be Christians alone. There is no such thing. The devil does not want you around other believers to encourage you on the right path. Find other believers who you truly Love, and hold on to them; Christians are dangerous in numbers.
  3. Choke Your Faith: Often the devil will slowly destroy your faith. It does not have to be all at once, but that slow chipping away is what gets a lot of people until they simply break and fall away. Maybe in a time of temptation. Mr 4:19 “and the worries of the world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.”
